Devil’s Town (Đavolja Varoš)

The Devil’s Town is located in the southern part of Serbia, on the slopes of Radan mountain, around 285km from Belgrade. Represents a rare natural phenomenon. In 2002, it was inscribed on the UNESCO Heritage listas well. Exactly 202 figures in the soil, bedecked with rock caps. Standing up to fifteen metres high and three metres wide.

There are a lot of legends about this place. One of them says they are in fact a group of petrified wedding guests – the bride and groom tricked by the devil into marrying a brother and a sister.

Anyhow, scientists have found that the Devil’s Town was created by erosion of the soil caused by heavy precipitation, which carried away layers of clay, while the parts of the soil underneath the rock caps remained intact. With the effects of wind, the sun and temperature changes, we are left with the curiously-shaped figures we see today.

Nearby there are two springs: “Đavolja voda” (Devil’s Water) and “Crveno vrelo” (Red spring).

    Sv. Petka church

One of the legends about Devil’s Town says that figures represent devils, wich were carried on humans back for a long time with great suffering, and transformed into stones, by spending the night in front of the st. Petka’s church, people get rid of their demons wich were transformed into stones.
St. Petka helps sick and weak people wich use this place with handkerchief and make a wish, after that you put it on a small tree, all your problems will stay in Devils Town.
